Suriphobia - Fear of Mice

Suriphobia is the term normally used to refer to the fear of mice. At times, it is used along with some other terms as musophobia from the Latin word mus for “mouse” and murophobia from the the taxonomic adjective “murine” for the Muridae family associated with mice and rats.

At present, the fear of mice or typically the suriphobia is actually one of the most common specific phobias afflicting various kinds of people all around the world. Like all types of phobias, this can degrade and cripple a person’s life at all means and at all costs.

Symptoms of Suriphobia

Usually, you may ascertain if a particular person is suffering from a phobia like suriphobia, through the symptoms or unlikely feelings he or she is experiencing.

More or less, if he or she is experiencing some sort of dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, breathlessness, speech and thinking problems, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, and fear of dying, then he or she might be suffering from a phobic disorder, particularly suriphobia.

Some other symptoms such as full blown anxiety or panic attack, sense of detachment from reality and immediate loss of control or temperament may also be experienced, depending on the severity of the condition.

Possible Causes of Suriphobia

Typically, development and occurrence of phobias like suriphobia is attributed to the thoughts created by the unconscious mind to serve as protective mechanisms from a particular threat or stimuli.

Sometimes, cause of suriphobia is also linked to some traumatic experience in the past involving the feared stimuli and in rare cases, even to possible brain irregularities and chemical imbalance.

Treatments for Suriphobia

A person suffering from suriphobia is normally encouraged to undergo first a therapy, typically a self help therapy. However, therapies can’t actually alleviate the symptoms abruptly.

And usually, therapies take some time, at times for months and even years and so intake of some potent drugs is also advised at the same time. But like everything else in this world, though such drugs can really help, they still have some drawbacks and for their case – they have side effects and withdrawal effects that can be severe.

And so, extra precaution is still strongly needed.
