Zoloft for Children with Anxiety & Depression

In our today’s tough times, even children have already their own sets of anxieties and depressions. They have many questions asked and also many emotions felt.

Some of them are already having suicidal attempts especially those children in their adolescence stage. But why is it like this? Is it because children of today are more intellectual and sensitive in his environment?

Actually, anxieties and other mental disorders may actually occur in the earliest years of a child’s brain development stage. But what medication is actually appropriate for these children? Zoloft is one of the drugs that children and adolescents with metal health disorders can take. Usually they are children aging 6-17 years old, having Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

But it is not approved or promoted for the treatment of depression among children or adolescents. But just like other drugs, it also has effects to people taking it most especially if it is already for a long-term medication. Come to think of the effects that a poor child can experience by taking these powerful drugs. Possible effects are as follows:

  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • omiting
  • Weight changes
  • Gas or bloating
  • Loss of appetite

Parents or guardians of children having mental health disorders should be very careful and closely monitor every single dosage taken. The young brains of these young children are still on its developing stage and extra serotonin brought about by Zoloft might have adverse effect on it. Thus, not only with the brain, research shows that serotonin also partakes in the functions of the heart. It participates in relaying messages to other cells through receptor sites and performs some cardiac functions. Anything in excess is also not good.

Take a look for example the case of Jessica, a mother of a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She shares her story on The Child Behavioral Health Forum on MedHelp. And it was very alarming thinking her child was only 4 years old and was on a variety of powerful drug medication.

She carefully followed the dosages of various drugs (such as Zoloft) that were prescribed to her son hoping that her child’s condition could somehow be better. But things worsen when her son became more hyper than ever. She already got confused on what’s helping her out and what’s not. Doctors have advised her that such actions of his son was because of his unusual combination of medications, and the variety and doses of psycho stimulant medications he has been on is quite out of the ordinary.

Such case of a mother like Jessica is very hard to deal with. It takes a lot of courage, patience and a lot of precaution. Today’s children are said to be the hope of the future. But how can they be if we won’t take care of them? Actually young minds of children can easily be educated or instructed compared to those of adult individuals. But not with the case of children having mental health disorders, it will take a lot of time and patience to teach them and make them understand.

We can never say that all these children must just simply rely on drugs and other forms of medication. Thus, individuals around with a child like that of Jessica must first and foremost make their child feel that they want him well not just only for a short span of time but also for the rest of his life.
